Apple introduces the next-generation iPad Pro, packed with an M2 chip.
The new iPad Pro features the next-level Apple Pencil hover experience, ProRes video recording, super-fast Wi-Fi 6E, and powerful features in iPadOS 16.
Cupertino, California Apple today announced the new iPad Pro with the M2 chip, offering the ultimate combination of portability, versatility and incredible performance. The new iPad Pro features the next-level Apple Pencil hover experience and ultra-fast wireless connectivity, the world’s most advanced mobile display, pro cameras, Face ID, Thunderbolt and a quad-speaker system. New features in iPadOS 16 – including platform manager, full external display support,1 Desktop-level apps and reference mode – take more workflows on the iPad. Powered by advanced hardware and iPadOS 16, the iPad Pro has an impressive array of powerful Pro apps unlike any other device of its kind. The new iPad Pro will be available to order starting today and in stores starting Wednesday, October 26.
“The next-generation iPad Pro pushes the boundaries of what’s possible on iPad, bringing even more versatility, power and portability to the ultimate iPad experience,” said Greg Joswick, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing. “Powered by the M2 chip, the new iPad Pro features incredible performance and cutting-edge technologies, including the next-level Apple Pencil hover experience, ProRes video recording, ultra-fast wireless connectivity and powerful iPadOS 16 features. Nothing else.”
The performance of the M2 chip
M2, the first of Apple’s next-generation M-series chips, brings even more speed and power to iPad Pro, with industry-leading power efficiency, integrated memory architecture and custom technologies.
The M2 has an 8-core CPU – up to 15 percent faster than the M1 – with an increase in both performance and efficiency cores, and a 10-core GPU that delivers up to 35 percent faster graphics performance for the most demanding users. Combined with the CPU and GPU, the 16-core neural engine can perform 15.8 trillion operations per second – 40 percent faster than M1 – while handling machine learning functions, making iPad Pro even more powerful. The M2 chip has 100GB/s integrated memory bandwidth – 50 percent more than the M1 – and supports up to 16GB of faster integrated memory, making multitasking and working with large assets more fluid.2
The M2 turbocharges performance for the most demanding workflows, from editing huge photo libraries and designers handling complex 3D objects, to healthcare professionals performing advanced imaging and analysis, to gamers enjoying graphics-intensive games. The M2’s power to the new media engine and image signal processor coupled with advanced cameras allows users to capture ProRes video for the first time and convert ProRes footage up to 3x faster. This means content creators can record, edit and publish cinema-grade video from a single device in the field.
The next level Apple Pencil hover experience
Powered by the new iPad Pro and iPadOS 16, hovering with the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) gives users a whole new way to interact with their display. The Apple Pencil is now located up to 12mm above the display, allowing users to preview their marks before making them. This allows users to draw and describe with greater precision, and makes everything users do with the Apple Pencil more effortless. For example, in Scribble, text fields automatically expand as the pencil approaches the screen, and handwriting is quickly converted to text. Third-party apps can use this new feature to create completely new markup and drawing experiences.
Super fast wireless connection
The new iPad Pro supports faster Wi-Fi connections with Wi-Fi 6E support;3 So users looking for fast connectivity can take their on-demand workflow with them wherever they go. Downloads are up to 2.4Gb/s, 2x faster than the previous generation. Wi-Fi + cellular models with 5G (sub-6GHz and mmWave4) now support more 5G networks around the world, so users can access their files, connect with colleagues and save their data in real-time while on the go.5
Unmatched Pro features are enabled in iPadOS 16.
In addition to major messaging updates, new tools in Mail and Safari, a new Weather app, and ways to interact with photos and videos with live text and visuals, iPadOS 16 introduces powerful productivity features that elevate the iPad Pro experience:
- level manager It’s a completely new multitasking experience that automatically organizes apps and windows, making switching between tasks faster and easier. Later this year, Level Manager will unlock full external display support. Up to 6K resolutions, so users can set up a suitable workspace and work on up to four apps on the iPad and up to four apps on an external display.
- Desktop level applications Enabling new capabilities optimized for the display on iPad Pro – including making apps more capable with new elements and interactions, seamless undo and redo, a redesigned inline find and replace experience, a new document menu, customizable toolbars, and the ability to Change file extensions, view folder size in files and more.
- Reference mode The 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display enables it to match color requirements in workflows such as review and approval, color grading and compositing, where accurate colors and consistent image quality are critical. This means pro users, including photographers and videographers, can manually edit HDR images and videos with every true-to-life detail, and cinematographers can preview content in a color profile that represents the final image on set.
iPad and environment
The new iPad models are designed to reduce their impact on the environment and feature 100 percent recycled gold – a first for iPad – on many of the printed circuit boards, as well as recycled aluminum, tin and rare earth elements. All iPad models meet Apple’s high energy efficiency standards and are mercury-, BFR-, PVC- and beryllium-free. The redesigned packaging in the new iPad Pro eliminates the outer plastic wrap and 99 percent of the packaging is fiber-based, Apple said in 2015. It brings it closer to its goal of eliminating plastic from packaging entirely by 2025.
Today, Apple is carbon neutral for its global corporate operations, and by 2030, it plans to be 100 percent carbon neutral throughout its manufacturing supply chain and all product life cycles. This means that every Apple device sold has a net-zero climate impact during physical manufacturing, assembly, shipping, customer use, charging, recycling and material recovery.
