Samsung had dibs on the original Gorilla Glass Victus, then it was the Galaxy S22 series that introduced the upgraded Victus+ and now history is about to repeat itself. The upcoming Galaxy S23 models will be the first to feature the new Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
Version 2 focuses on survivable drops, including falls from concrete up to 1m (hip height) or up to 2m (head height) onto pavement. This improved drop resistance does not come at the expense of scratch resistance.
GG Victus 2 is environmentally friendly as it contains an average of 22% of “pre-consumer” recycled content. This environmental claim has earned the certification mark.
The press release was vague about the phones, not specifically mentioning the “S23.” But given the time (Galaxy Unpacked for the S23 series is scheduled for Wednesday), there is no doubt.
Presumably the Victus 2 will be used to protect the front and back of the phones, just like the Victus+ protects both sides of each S22 phone. Here’s what Stephanie Choi, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Samsung MX, had to say about the new glass:
“We are committed to integrating sustainability into our product lifecycle, working with like-minded partners like Corning to reduce our environmental impact and improve performance. Our next-generation Galaxy Flash smartphones are the first devices to use Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® 2, which simultaneously provides better strength and Provides improved durability.
And a word from David Velasquez, Vice President and General Manager, Gorilla Glass:
“Today’s consumers expect damage-resistant smartphone displays. For more than a decade, Gorilla Glass has met the needs of smartphone users, setting the standard for tough cover materials. We are proud to continue our long partnership with Samsung and proud to have our innovations play a vital role in Samsung’s new Galaxy smartphones.
