Sometimes a good idea sounds like cold water.
Fares created the Ksabati MySwimPro A.D. To provide in-depth underwater fitness videos for like-minded athletes in 2015. The app is similar to Apple Health to keep your swimming and fitness data secure. A.D. With the 2021 Olympic year, he and co-founder Adam O’Connor are preparing to make bigger waves.
We spoke to Ksebati, a three-time US Masters champion, about the power of further change and what every entrepreneur should know before embarking on app development.
How did you start creating apps?
Before I started MySwimPro in 2015, I worked on four different startups and was always the head coach on the side. At that time, there was nothing to talk about swimmers, so that’s when the light bulb came into play.
If you work on something that you understand very well, it’s very easy because you have that instinct, that special lens. I am a master and a coach, but most of all I am a master. Not only do I not understand, but I care.
How is the MySwimPro team organized these days?
Our headquarters is technically in Anne Arbor, but we have team members throughout the United States and a few countries, such as Turkey and Ukraine. The app is available in nine languages, and we can do most of it at home, as we speak about a dozen languages in our group, which is really unique.
What do you do as a team to be motivated?
Go to the pool! I actually went swimming two hours ago. Resting in the middle of the day is part of our culture because we are a symbol of fitness. I want everyone to be comfortable doing that, even if they are not swimming.
What was the most challenging time for your team, and how did you spend it?
In March, as the pools closed, we thought, “OK, this may be two or three years, but we can’t sit down and do anything.” So we took immediate action by creating 200 dry land videos and eight training programs. We went to my brother’s house and set up a salon in the living room.
What do you know you want to know when you start?
If consistency is very important, it takes time to develop, and if you can get a little better every day, the combined effect is absolutely crazy. We have been in this over 1,800 days for about five years and we are trying to be at least 1 percent better every day.
