HTC Dream, the very first Android smartphone is based on a 32-bit processor which only supports 32-bit apps and games. As time went on, we started seeing phones with 64-bit processors that only supported 32-bit apps. In the past few years, almost all Android smartphones have 64-bit processors with support for 32-bit and 64-bit applications and games. But, the Google Pixel 7 series might be changing the trend.

According to reports, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will only support 64-bit apps. While this may not be an issue for most users, it will definitely hurt a few fans.

Most users are fine.

If you are thinking of downloading a new app from Google Play Store on your Pixel 7 series smartphones, there is no reason to worry. In fact, almost all modern applications and games are built on 64-bit architecture.

Tensor G2 is capable of running 32-bit applications.

It is noteworthy that the ARM CPU cores on the Tensor G2 fully run 32-bit Android applications. However, according to Mishal Rahman, editor, Esper, Google has disabled the same component at the software level, so the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro won’t be able to run 32-bit apps like the original Flappy Bird.

So far, this software lock is limited to the Pixel 7 series, so it runs the 32-bit game called Flappy Bird on the Google Pixel 6a on the latest Android 13 operating system.

Is Google ahead of the curve?

ARM’s latest CPU core architectures — the Cortex A715 and Cortex X3 — do not natively support 32-bit applications. Therefore, upcoming smartphones featuring processors like Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will not have 32-bit app support at the hardware level.

Google seems to want to ensure all new features and technologies are ahead of the competition. Currently, Google may completely disable the installation of 32-bit Android apps on Android 14 OS.

Have you been using older 32-bit apps or games on your Android smartphone? If so, it’s better to stick with your current smartphone and not upgrade to the Pixel 7 series. All apps listed on the Google Play Store are now 64-bit apps and the search giant will stop offering 32-bit apps by 2021.
