If you have a Fitbit account, you’re in for a big change. According to the company, it will end support for Fitbit accounts and will instead require a Google account.
Fitbit officially became part of Google in January 2021. Since then, Google has been looking for ways to bring its ecosystem and Fitbit’s ecosystem closer together. For example, Google has said that the upcoming Pixel Watch will have deep integration with Fitbit. The latest push into this united front is Fitbit’s new “Fitbit by Google” brand.
On Fitbit’s help page, the company has questions about this new brand and what’s in store for the future. In the Q&A list, Fitbit on Fitbit talks about Google Accounts. The company announced that it will enable Google Accounts on Fitbit in 2023 and will offer several benefits to Google Account users:
- Single entrances
- Account security
- Centralized privacy controls for Fitbit user data
Further down the page, however, it is stated that some Fitbit applications will require a Google Account after Google Accounts are launched on Fitbit in 2023. It also mentions that Fitbit account support will end in 2025, requiring all users to have a Google account. account forward. The company says:
If you have a Fitbit account, after Google Accounts are activated on Fitbit, you have the option to transfer Fitbit to your Google account or continue to use your existing Fitbit devices and services as long as they are supported by your Fitbit account. . Support for Fitbit accounts will continue until at least early 2025. After support for Fitbit accounts ends, a Google account is required to use Fitbit. We are clear with our customers about expiration dates for Fitbit accounts through notifications in the Fitbit app, email and help articles.
Although this is a remarkable development, perhaps it should not be surprising. Since Fitbit is now part of Google, it makes sense that Google wants to simplify things by replacing Fitbit accounts with Google Accounts. At least they’re giving consumers more time to adjust to the inevitable change.
