These phones received an amazing response from buyers and were sold out for selected pin codes within hours of being sold. A refresh of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro is expected from the company.
Google Pixel 7 Series uses an older 5nm node
The latest Google flagships draw power from Samsung’s in-house Tensor G2 processor. While the Samsung Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipsets are based on the 4nm node, a tried and tested manufacturing process, the Google Tensor G2 is modeled on the 5nm process.
Confirming the use of an older 5nm node for the Tensor G2, a Google spokesperson said the process helped them meet real-world use cases without compromising power efficiency and performance. Specifically, the Tensor G2 features an octa-core CPU design with 2x Cortex-X1, 2x Cortex-A78, and 4x Cortex-A55 cores and an upgraded Mali-G710 MC10 GPU. It also offers higher clock speeds and improves both single-core and multi-core performance compared to its predecessor.
The Tensor G2-Powered Pixel 7 Series may lose on the performance front.
While Google is offering improved graphics with the Tensor G2, this is the same GPU used by the Dimensity 9000 series, albeit with fewer shader cores. The good thing is that the improved Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) is capable of delivering faster camera operations compared to its predecessor.
In terms of CPU performance, the Tensor G2 doesn’t fare well against rival SoCs powering 2022’s flagship smartphones, including the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the OnePlus 10T and Asus ROG Phone 6, the Exynos 2200/Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the OnePlus 10 Pro. With Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Despite that Android flagship comparison, Apple’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are out of the Tensor G2’s league in terms of CPU performance, using the A15 Bionic and A16 Bionic respectively.
To sum up, although the Tensor G2 comes with an upgrade over the previous one used in the Pixel 6 series, it’s not a huge improvement when it comes to CPU performance. Using Cortex-A78 cores is a good step, but Apple and Qualcomm are leading more powerful CPU technology.
Should you buy the Google Pixel 7 series?
The company is known for its camera prowess, as the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro may not perform well against Apple and Samsung’s flagships. If you’re focused on the camera, you can buy the Pixel 7 series.
Specifically, the Google Pixel 7 sports a dual-camera setup with a 50MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide lens, while the Pixel 7 Pro sports a triple-camera setup with an additional 48MP telephoto lens for 5x optical zoom and support. 30x digital zoom. The phones also offer camera features like anti-blur, cinematic blur for portraits and 10-bit HDR video recording that works with YouTube and other platforms.
