Google Pixel smartphones are considered to be one of the best camera phones in the market. Rival Apple last month revealed its 2022 iPhone lineup, and Google was at it to take on the competition. Google launched its camera-focused Google Pixel 7 smartphones at its event today. The Pixel 7 series of smartphones is the successor to the 2021 Pixel 6 series and brings more improvements. Let’s dive in to check out what’s new.
Google Pixel 7: Features
Google “Why fix it when it’s not broken?” Pixel 7 handsets are coming this year. Design-wise, there’s no major difference here, barring the frame and camera island, which get a new paint job. The Pixel 7 offers light colors for the rear camera island, as does the Pixel 6’s all-black camera island. The smartphone comes with a glass and metal body for a premium look and feel.
The Google Pixel 7 has a 6.3-inch AMOLED display with full HD+ resolution and 25 percent higher brightness compared to the Pixel 6. Smooth UI scrolling and gaming gets a 90Hz display refresh rate. The 2021 Pixel 6 series comes with Google’s newly developed Tensor chipset. The Pixel 7 gets an improved Google Tensor G2 chip based on the 4nm manufacturing process. Google promises that the processor will be more energy efficient and offer more performance compared to the previous iteration. Moreover, the Tensor processing unit is estimated to run machine learning processes at a speed of 35 percent.
Speaking of the cameras, the Google Pixel 7 has the same main sensor and ultra-wide shooter as the Pro version. However, it lacks the telephoto sensor. The dual camera setup includes a 50MP main sensor with OIS, Laser AF and PDAF. It is paired with a 12MP ultra-wide shooter. Selfies and video calls are handled by the improved 10.8MP sensor placed on the punch-hole camera cutout on the display.
The rear cameras of the Pixel 7 can shoot videos in 4K resolution at 60fps. It packs camera features like Pixel Shift, Photo Unblur, Movie Motion Blur, High Definition 8x Zoom, Real Tone and the crowd favorite, Magic Eraser. Some other notable features include in-display fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6E, IP68 water/dust resistance, Titan M2 chip multi-level security, USB Type-C 3.1 port and stereo speakers.
The Pixel 7 is powered by a 4,355mAh battery, down from its predecessor’s 4,614mAh. Even with the smaller battery, Google claims that it can provide up to 72 hours of backup with its Extreme Battery Saver feature turned on. The vanilla Google Pixel 7 supports both wired and wireless charging. It gets 30W fast charging support and 20W wireless charging support. The Google Pixel 7 runs on Android 13 and is guaranteed to receive three major OS updates and five years of security updates.
