All five major brands experienced double-digit declines year-over-year compared to Q4 2021, and the overall figure represents the largest quarterly decline.
Compared to 2021 figures, Q4’s large load reduction contributed to the 11.3% annual decline. In the year A total of 1.21 billion smartphones were shipped in 2022 compared to 1.36 billion in 2021.

Focusing on preliminary figures for Q4,2022, Apple led the market with 72.3 million shipments and 24.1% market share. Samsung ranked second with 58.2 million phones shipped and 19.4% market share. Xiaomi ranked third with 33.2 million shipments and 11% of the market, and the company showed the highest shipment volume in Q4 2021 compared to -26.3%. Oppo (25.3 million), and vivo (22.9 million) rounded out the top-five ranks.
Combined shipment figures for 2022 show Samsung as the leader with 260.9 million units and a 21.6% market share. Apple ranked second with 226.4 million and 18.8% of the market, while Xiaomi had 153.1 million shipments and 12.7% of the total market.

Oppo (103.3 million) and vivo (99 million) rounded out the top five, with the two companies showing the biggest year-on-year declines at -22.7% and -22.8% respectively.
Commenting on the declining value of shipments, IDC analysts point out that declining consumer spending and rising inflation are the main reasons for the decline in demand for new devices. IDC predicts that vendors will try to rethink their device portfolios as retail channels do a better job of allocating existing inventory.
