Although the invention of “Robleble” is not entirely new, LG has never expanded its line of Android smartphones. Now Motorola is trying its hand at the idea. The Lenovo subsidiary presented a functional concept smartphone at the Tech World 2022 event.
TL; DR
- Motorola has presented a “Rollable” screen smartphone.
- This is still a concept device.
- The display of the device expands vertically.
Motorola Rollable seems to be ready for serial production
A smartphone with a foldable display could be the next big thing after foldables. Folding also has a way of turning a smartphone into a tablet, but the downside is currently the thickness of the case, which makes the foldable device a real “clunker” in the pocket. Antoine is currently testing the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, which is “very thin” foldable.
The idea of rollables is more convenient in terms of shape. When the device is folded, it is very small and still relatively thin. The Motorola Rollable has a 4-inch POLED display by default, but it can be extended to 6.5 inches diagonally at the push of a button.
It’s true, we’ve already seen the idea of a foldable phone from Oppo and TCL. And of course from LG, which mainly manufactures a few units of the foldable phone. Unfortunately, the South Koreans backed out before the launch, which is why LG Rollables were distributed among the company’s management.
However, there is a small but subtle difference: the Motorola Rollable is the only Android smartphone that expands vertically. LG, Oppo and TCL have developed their models horizontally, that is sideways, not upwards.
The Motorola Rollable was created in its former hometown of Chicago, Illinois, where 312 Labs is headquartered. Practically a center for innovation, product management, research, design and engineering. In other words, the center where Motorola razr 2022 was born, which should gradually reach the western shores.
