Apple introduced a 48MP main camera for the iPhone 14 Pro ( review ) and it is expected to be included in the iPhone 15 Pro. The next-generation iPhone 15 Pro models will likely retain the 12MP super-wide shooter, which has remained the same quality for years with each new model released. A new report mentions that Apple may upgrade this particular shooter to 48 MP starting with the iPhone 16 Pro.
These rumors originate from Hightongs Analyst and Apple leaker Jeff Pu. His report is based on surveys from several Apple suppliers, and it is believed that next year’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a new 48MP camera, a big jump from the current 12MP sensor.
Advantages of having a large camera sensor
Using a higher megapixel count, the iPhone maker is paving the way for a number of advantages on the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) main camera, such as pixel-binning technology. This technique combines multiple pixels into one large, or superpixel, to capture more detail and light. Images based on pixel-binning have lower resolutions than the original sensor is capable of, but provide better overall results.
How wide the area of the new sensor will be is not specified. Given the history of Apple’s iPhone hardware, the company has always included an enlarged sensor for improved shooting in new iPhone models released every year. Moreover, it is not clear whether there are changes in the field of view of 120 degrees.
