TL; DR
- Sony has announced a September 1 launch event for a Xperia device.
- The company also hints at a compact form factor, hinting that the Xperia 5 IV is coming.
Sony already launched the popular Xperia 1 IV earlier this year, but we didn’t see the Xperia 5 IV at the time. Now the Japanese manufacturer has announced an event for the new Xperia device next week.
The launch event will begin on September 1st at 3 AM ET (4 PM Japan Time), so what should you expect? “Be creative,” reads a line from the YouTube video and the video’s description. In other words, the Xperia 5 IV is definitely on the way.
Compared to the Xperia 1 range, Sony’s Xperia 5 series is the company’s pocket-friendly flagship line. The last few Xperia 5 devices offered a 6.1-inch screen compared to the 6.5-inch panel of the last few Xperia 1 phones.
What you need to know about the Xperia 5 IV?
A smaller form factor also seems possible in 2022, as apparently the Xperia 5 IV FCC documents indicate a 155.74mm tall phone. In comparison, the Xperia 1 IV measures 165mm tall. The listing also suggests the presence of wireless charging and a 3.5mm port.
We don’t know much else about the new smartphone, but the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC could appear alongside the Xperia 1 IV’s flexible telephoto camera. The Xperia 5 series usually has a few drawbacks compared to the Xperia 1 range, such as a reduced display resolution, smaller battery and no 3D ToF camera.
Otherwise, they’ll all be revealed on September 1st, but here’s hoping Sony fans won’t have to wait ages to get their hands on the new smartphone.
