TL; DR
- Amazon has announced that it has completed the first wave of Mater releases.
- The release brings Matter to 17 different eco devices, plugs, switches and bulbs.
- Amazon will bring Matter support to more devices in 2023.
The new standard of smart home interaction, Matter, is slowly finding its way into many smart home devices. The latest company to roll out Matter support for its devices is Amazon.
On the company’s blog, Amazon announced that it is phasing out the release of support for the issue and has completed the first phase of this project. According to the company, this first wave of implementation brings Matter support to 17 different eco devices, plugs, switches and bulbs.
Amazon describes its approach this way.
Our step-by-step process will allow us to begin rolling out Matter support for the most common device types as we continue to work with our partners to test functionality, stability, and longevity to ensure our customers have a seamless and high-quality Alexa experience.
If you’re not familiar with Matter, it’s a standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) along with hundreds of other companies, including Google, Samsung, Apple, and Amazon. The ultimate goal is to make it easy for consumers to customize and build their own smart home network without worrying about what gadget works with what.
As Amazon noted on its blog, this development should expand the number of connectivity options available to users. Speaking of the Google Nest thermostat, it should work well with Amazon’s Alexa.
As this is only the first phase of the rollout, Amazon may add Matter support to more of its devices by 2023. This announcement comes shortly after Google announced the same about Matter support coming to various of its own products. Like Amazon, Google plans to expand support for Matter next year.
