Designed to inspire participants ages 10 and up to explore application development in a fun, welcoming environment, the new experience is the latest in Apple’s library to help students, families and educators begin their journey in the growing field of computer science.
The new sessions begin Dec. 5 as part of the Today at Apple program, which offers free daily in-store sessions to help customers unleash their creativity and get the most out of their devices.1 Anyone, families and groups, can register now at apple.co/coding-sessions.

During the lab, Apple Creative Pros lead aspiring coders and their mentors through an interactive activity using the iPad and Swift Playgrounds — Apple’s fun and easy-to-use app that takes students from the first line of code to their first app. Working in the About Me Playground, participants use SwiftUI and a new real-time app preview to customize their app and bring it to life with fun fonts, background colors, Memoji, and more.
Once operational, the new lab will be part of Apple’s rotating Today at Apple programming. Customers can sign up for Coding Skills: Getting Started with Swift Playgrounds, another Today at Apple session that introduces the Swift programming language and fundamental concepts through interactive play, allowing participants to explore coding basics like commands, functions, and loops.
Anyone — regardless of experience level — can visit apple.com/today to sign up for scheduled Apple Today sessions at their local Apple Store, or schedule a special lesson at a time that works best for their team, organization or department. For them. Today, Apple sessions are offered for free and use tools provided by Apple for all activities.
Resources for students and teachers
In-Store Today’s Apple Coding Sessions are just one of the many free resources Apple offers to students of all ages.
For educators who want to introduce app development with Swift to their students, Apple has created a helpful guide to building apps in Swift Playgrounds. Available in the Apple Education community, the Honoring You Teacher guide shows a starter project using the About Me Playground, in which students personalize a sample app that honors a place or tradition that is important to them. The guide can be applied to any subject in the classroom or used by campus coding clubs.
Students ready to explore more topics in Swift and Xcode on iPad and Mac can turn to Apple’s Everyone Code and develop with Swift tools. Teacher’s Guides also help teachers build foundational knowledge in computer science to bring into their classrooms—from grade school to college and continuing education.
Careers for the next generation
Apple’s coding resources are designed to teach essential skills and prepare students for high-demand careers in computer science. Earlier this year, independent analysis showed that the iOS app economy continues to record as an engine of economic growth and opportunity, supporting more than 2.2 million jobs in the U.S. by 2021. Development, project management, design and more.
Aspiring entrepreneurs, developers and designers can expand their skills and businesses through the Apple Developer Academy.
