TL; DR
- An APK rip revealed a new video blurring feature.
- The teardown also exposed video overlay effects.
- Neither feature seems to work yet.
One of the big selling points of the Pixel 7 series is the anti-blur feature of Google Photos. Now that we’re moving on to the Pixel 8, what new features does the company have in store for the next phone? It looks like we have the answer now through APK teardown.
Before we go any further, it’s important to point out that the APK rip will reveal lines of code that hint at potential future features. There is no guarantee that Google will officially release these features.
With that said, it looks like Google is currently working on a tool that makes videos cleaner and sharper, much like the Pixel 7’s Photo Unblur feature that cleans up blurry photos. according to 9to5GoogleYou can forcefully enable the UI for this video blurring tool on your own device. However, it seems that the feature has not yet been implemented.
Just like how photo blurring was introduced to Pixel handsets, Google may be planning to make video blurring exclusive as well. There’s no indication in the code that the feature is limited to Pixel phones, though.
In addition to video blurring, overlay effects are also found in the code. Unfortunately this feature doesn’t seem to work either, but the UI is there.
The UI displays 14 video effects that include:
- after school
- B&W
- Chromatic
- in the future
- Glass
- Golden
- Mary
- multiplication.
- Polaroid
- Rainbow rays
- Reflect
- RGB Pulse
- Super 8
- VHS
It’s safe to assume that these apply filter-like effects to your video. For example, B&W can convert a video to black and white and Polaroid can make a video look like a Polaroid photo.
