Google Pixel 7 vs. Pixel 7 Pro: design and display
If you look at the new Google smartphones for the first time, you won’t notice any major differences between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, other than the size. The looks are also slightly changed compared to the previous models. There are three colors to choose from: Obsidian and Snow are available for both, and the smaller device is also available in Lemongrass and Hazel Pro.
Both the smartphones rely on Corning Gorilla Glass Victos on the front and back. Both are IP68 certified and are water and dust-resistant. As usual, there’s a visual camera band on the back that stretches across the entire width. The frame is matte aluminum on the Pixel 7 and polished aluminum on the Pixel 7 Pro.
If you look around the device, you will find a SIM card slot next to the power button, volume control and stereo speakers. Google offers dual SIM support, the second being eSIM.
The displays don’t just differ in size, which is 6.3 inches for the Pixel 7 and 6.7 inches for the Pixel 7 Pro. While FHD+ resolution should be good enough for the smaller model, Google offers a QHD+ resolution of 3220 x 1440 pixels for the Pro. In addition, the LTPO has an OLED panel, the smaller brother “only” has an OLED screen.
Another difference is the refresh rate (90 Hz in the Pixel 7, 120 Hz in the Pixel 7 Pro) and the format also differs: 19.5: 9 in the larger Pro, 20: 9 in the Pixel 7. In terms of brightness, both devices are again equal up to 1,000 nits; Only the Pro’s peak brightness of 1,500 nits is higher than the Pixel 7’s 1,400 nits.
Google Pixel 7 vs. Pixel 7 Pro: SoC and Performance
Google doesn’t make any changes to the SoC and keeps the line we know from the Pixel 6 (Review) and Pixel 6 Pro (Review). This time, the Google Tensor G2 is used, which is the second generation of Google’s own processor. The company offers “Titan M2” security chip.
The security chip is expected to make the smartphone more resistant to sophisticated attacks. Later this year, both models will get VPN service with Google One subscription at no extra cost, so your online activities are protected.
Rumors had it months ago that the Tensor G2’s performance is somewhat stronger than its predecessor. However, before we complain about that, we will test both phones extensively and of course we will share our findings with you.
Google packs 128GB and 256GB of internal storage on both devices. The Pixel 7’s 8GB of RAM is less than the Pixel 7 Pro’s 12GB. In terms of connectivity, both devices are again very similar. Both devices use a 5G or LTE network, Wi-Fi 6E is supported, and the rest is the same. The only difference is the ultra-wideband support in the Pixel 7 Pro.
Google Pixel 7 vs. Pixel 7 Pro: Camera
A look at the back reveals that the camera systems of both the Pixel phones are different. The bar tells us it has one more sensor than the Pixel 7.
The main camera is almost the same: 50 MP camera each with octa-PD autofocus and quad-bayer matrix, 1/1.31″ image sensor size, f/1.85 aperture, and 1.2 μm pixel size. It comes with eight times “Super Resolution”. Zoom is only available in the Pixel 7. Google has given the Pixel 7 Pro a 12MP telephoto lens, with 5x optical zoom and 30x Super Resolution zoom.
The setup is rounded off with a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor each. These sensors are again almost the same, only the field of view is larger on the Pro 125.8 114 pixels on the 7th degree. Finally, there is a 10.8 MP selfie camera with fixed focus on the front.
As far as the camera features are concerned, both the devices again seem to be similarly equipped. Only the macro focus function is exclusive to the Pro model. Already familiar features have been improved: “Night Vision” now requires only half the exposure time, and “Real Tone” has been trained to accurately reproduce skin tones even in people of color.
As you can imagine, we examine the camera systems in depth in our detailed tests.
Google Pixel 7 vs. Pixel 7 Pro: Software
We don’t need to talk about the software in detail, of course both models come with the super nice and clean Android 13 pre-installed out of the box. You can read more about what the latest iteration of the operating system has to offer in the linked article. Google has promised at least five years of security updates for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
Google Pixel 7 vs Pixel 7 Pro: Battery life and fast charging
Unlike the software, there are differences in the battery. Of course, the size of the devices alone means that Google will give the Pro a thicker battery. The Californian manufacturer has a capacity of 4,355 mAh for the Pixel 7 and 5,000 mAh for the Pixel 7 Pro.
Both models can charge quickly at 30 watts, although 30 watts in 2022 is fast when you look at the competition, for example from Xiaomi.
Unfortunately, you won’t find the charger in the package of either device; It must be purchased separately. Thanks to the Qi function, you can charge the phones wirelessly. According to Google, the battery lasts for more than 24 hours and can be charged to 50% in 30 minutes via cable.
Wireless charging takes a bit longer, as the Pixel 7 only charges 20 watts this way, or 23 watts for the Pro. Of course, we show in detail in our tests how fast the devices charge and how long the battery lasts.
Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro prices and availability
If you want to buy the Pixel 7, you can do so starting at $599. You’ll have to pay at least $899 for the Pixel 7 Pro. Google has kept the price stable as a result. Starting today, you can shop from the Google Store and other partners. Pre-orders are now available.
Summary
We’ll get down to business as soon as possible and test both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro for you. Until then, we have to do what the spec sheets tell us. After that we probably have to deal with a not too big update.
After getting our hands on both models, we can determine how much better the camera is and how well the second generation Tensor performs. If you’ve decided you want to buy one of the new Pixel phones, it’s the specs that set the models apart.
The devices are similar in performance and software. Therefore, the personal choice in terms of size or the importance of the camera is crucial. The Pixel 7 Pro has a clear advantage here due to its added telephoto lens and macro focus feature.
Last but not least, price can tip the scales. At first glance, if camera features are important to you, I’d recommend the bigger Pixel 7 Pro.
However, please let us know in the comments what your first impression is after the presentation of the devices and whether you already know whether you will choose Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro.
