Despite its precarious position in the industry, Huawei has been churning out premium phones that can compete with industry giants like Samsung and Apple. This year, the China-based company seems to be doing it again by introducing the new Mate series – the Mate 50 – globally.
Huawei is known for releasing luxury flagship phones and the Mate 50 is no different. The back of the phone comes in glass or vegan leather. The glass finish is available in silver or black. The vegan leather variant instead comes in an orange color that the company says is inspired by the “orange rays of the sun.”
On the back of the phone, the company’s space ring design has been brought back from the Mate 40. However, this time, it looks more elegant using the Clous de Paris step-design design, a first for the company. . The Space Ring features a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 64 MP telephoto camera, a 50 MP ultra aperture camera and a proximity light sensor.
The ultra aperture camera is Huawei’s first 10-size adjustable physical aperture. According to Huawei, while in Auto mode, Smart Aperture can automatically adjust the aperture size to match the scene. Switching to professional mode allows you to manually adjust the depth of field and the level of blur.
The front of the phone will be covered with a new Kulun glass instead of Gorilla Glass. Huawei claims Kunlun Glass makes the device last 10 times longer than regular glass. With this comes the IP rating Water and dust resistance IP68. You can visit our IP Ratings article to learn what these ratings mean.
As for what powers the device, the Mate 50 series features Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 with 4G. It will also have a 4,700mAh battery with 66W wired Supercharge support and 50W wireless Supercharge.
With no Google ecosystem to back up the Mate 50 series, unfortunately, it’s still a tough phone to recommend. But if you must have it, the Mate 50 Pro (8GB + 256GB) is available in black or silver for €1,299 (~$1,249) and the Mate 50 Pro (8GB + 512GB) in orange for €1,399. (~$1,346)
