After the feature has appeared on Android smartphones for several years, the always-on display debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Although Apple’s aim was to add functionality to the iPhone, it was disliked by many due to its flashy features and limited customization capabilities. Apple is fixing these in iOS 16.2.
Apple has started shipping iOS 16.2 Beta 3 to developers and internals. One of the key changes in this software update includes two more buttons on the always-on display, which previously had one option to turn the feature on or off completely. Users are now presented with a toggle to show the background wallpaper and notifications.
Disabling the wallpaper on devices running the latest iOS 16.2 beta will cause any colored image to appear on the lock screen with a pure black background, which is only time and widgets. Similarly, turning off notifications will remove any pushed content below, regardless of whether the show’s wallpaper is active or not.
It is unclear whether these options will be final. Apple may change or add some features with it over time. But considering we’re on the third beta of iOS 16.2, it’s safe to say that these will remain until the official release. Apple is expected to release the latter in December.
