Qualcomm is now set to select TSMC as the sole manufacturer of its upcoming flagship chipsets that will put Samsung in the dark. In addition to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 coming later this year, the Taiwanese foundry will likely build Qualcomm’s third and fourth Gen Snapdragon 8 chips, Laker said.
TL; DR
- Samsung is facing problems with its current founder and chipset.
- Qualcomm stopped Samsung from manufacturing its flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen processors.
- Samsung is working on a new premium chip that will be ready by 2025.
Samsung’s silicon business has recently been disrupted by at least the 4nm node process. The company couldn’t catch a break from the Exynos mess, and now, it’s suffered another major blow. According to the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, TSMC will produce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 only with a 4nm node. The innovation of both Snapdragon Gen 3 and Gen 4 chips is expected to ultimately be awarded to TSMC.
To refresh, TSMC and Samsung have both released the current SD 8 Gen 1. However, Samsung’s output is less efficient and problematic, which in turn affects the performance of devices powered by the chip. Perhaps this is the reason why Qualcomm dropped Samsung’s founding.
The same leak also revealed that next year’s Samsung Galaxy S23 series will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 instead of the Exynos 2300. More efficient than the new SD8 Gen 1 Plus.
Samsung has yet to fully exit the chip manufacturing business.
Samsung is currently rumored to be working on a premium chipset that could replace its current Exynos lineup and rival Apple’s Bionic and M processors. Unfortunately, it won’t be ready until 2025, which is about the time for the Galaxy S25 series.
