Xiaomi seems to be planning to discontinue the Xiaomi Cloud Gallery Sync feature. Developer Kacper Skrzypek has received notice for this draft, but the company has yet to make it public.
For those who don’t know, Gallery Sync gives Xiaomi users 5GB of free cloud storage that can hold photos and videos. But if you are hearing this for the first time, you have nothing to worry about.
For those using the feature, Xiaomi has developed a way to transfer your photos and videos to Google Photos. And if you don’t want to do that, you have the option of downloading a copy to store locally instead.
Gallery Sync also has a paid version that gives users more storage – Xiaomi cancels subscriptions and offers full refunds.
The draft announcement uses placeholder dates (“XX XX 2022”), so it’s unclear when gallery syncing will close, but it looks like it’s happening this year. Note that other Xiaomi Cloud services (syncing and backing up contacts, messages and notes) will continue to work. Also, it’s possible that gallery syncing has continued in China, but that’s not confirmed.
Here’s a picture of how the photo transfer works:
Gallery Sync users can transfer their photos and videos to Google Photos.
Once the official announcement comes, you will want to download or transfer the data – it seems that Xiaomi will only keep the data in 2023 and delete it after that. The ad says. “We provide a way to download gallery data stored in Xiaomi Cloud to your personal device. Data download is only available until XX, XX, 2023, after which this feature will no longer be supported.
P.S. The original ad was here, but has been removed. The closing time is still unknown and will vary by region.
