“No matter where people are on their health and wellness journey, it’s easy to start exercising and keep them motivated with workouts and meditations that appeal to everyone,” said Jay Blahnik, Apple’s vice president of fitness technologies. “Whether people want to increase their cardio with the new form of exercise, kickboxing; move to Beyoncé’s latest hits; or wind down with meditation before bed, there’s something for everyone to take care of their body and mind in the new year.”
Kickboxing and new trainers
Kickboxing workouts help build full-body fitness, and are a great way to build strength, power, coordination and balance. Starting January 9, Fitness+ will add kickboxing as a new total-body cardio workout. Each workout consists of a separate set of moves followed by a final round, which combines the moves that users have learned into one full one-minute interval. No equipment is required, and workouts are 10, 20 or 30 minutes long.
Kickboxing is led by two Fitness+ coaches. Jamie-Ray Hartshore, who users know and love from Treadmill, HIIT and Time to Run workouts, trained in Muay Thai and competed professionally in Thailand.
In addition, Nez Daly will join the coaching staff to lead kickboxing workouts. She made history when she became the first female Muay Thai fighter in Thailand to wear a hijab. In her workouts, she brings the drive of an accomplished athlete to inspire users with every jab, cross and kick.
In addition to Daly, two more new coaches will join the Fitness+ coaching team in January: Brian Cochrane for HIIT and Jenn Lau for Strength. Hailing from Scotland, Cochrane grew up playing a variety of sports and has made HIIT training a versatile exercise. As a former singer in an indie band, he continues to be inspired by the way music and movement intersect.
Lau founded a gym in her hometown of Toronto, and she’s as passionate about fitness as she is about helping people stay active. She brings tenacity and playfulness to every lift and lunge she teaches.
Introducing sleep meditation
Meditation on Fitness+ is designed to help users release stress and anxiety. A new meditation theme, Sleep, will be added to the meditation library, joining the nine themes of serenity, gratitude, perseverance and creativity. The powerful library is designed to make meditation practice more powerful and useful than ever. A new sleep meditation is added each week, and each practice can be done as part of a wind-down routine or while floating.
To help users get started with sleep meditation, a new program, Introduction to Sleep Meditation, will be launched. The program consists of four 20-minute meditation sessions, ending with five minutes of relaxing music. The meditations — which can be done anytime, anywhere, each using different techniques to help users slow down and relax — “quiet your mind,” “relax your body,” “appreciate your day” and “visualize relaxation.” “
