details of the situation:
Xiaomi 14 vs Xiaomi 14 Pro: display and design
One of the most noticeable differences between the two Xiaomi smartphones is their size: the Xiaomi 14 is based on a 6.36-inch display, while the screen in the Xiaomi 14 Pro is 6.73 inches. Both displays offer LTPO with a variable refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz, and the 460 ppi pixel density is the same on both devices.
In relation to the larger display format, the Pro model is a bit bulky. It is about 9 mm long, 4 mm wide, and weighs exactly 30 grams. Both the smartphones are protected against dust and water according to the IP68 standard. The Xiaomi 14 Pro is also expected to be available in a special titanium version – just like a certain Apple flagship phone that was recently reviewed.
Xiaomi 14 vs Xiaomi 14 Pro: SoC and Performance
Both new Xiaomi smartphones are equipped with Qualcomm’s new flagship processor, which is expected to power most of the big high-end smartphones in the coming year. We’ve already reported elsewhere what Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is capable of.
At least in China, the Xiaomi 14 is available with 8, 12, or 16 GB of RAM; The Pro model skips the small RAM difference. The basic model comes with 256, 512 and 1 TB of storage, but the Pro model surprisingly lacks a midrange version. It is not yet known in which storage configuration the two devices will go to Europe. As usual, don’t expect to see Xiaomi 14 phones in US stores.
In addition to 5G, both Xiaomi smartphones naturally support the new WLAN standard Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth version 5.4. A USB port with USB 3.2 Gen 2 support and 10 GBit/s data transfer speed is also onboard.
Both smartphones are based on Android and run Xiaomi’s newly announced HyperOS operating system, replacing MIUI. Unlike MIUI, HyperOS is also expected to run on a number of other device categories, for example, smart home devices – and possibly a Xiaomi car next year.
Xiaomi 14 vs Xiaomi 14 Pro: Camera
Improving the Leica collaboration we saw with the Xiaomi 13T and 13T Pro makes the manufacturer clear: the camera is extremely important to them. The Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro once again pack three cameras each, which at first glance look very similar.
Both smartphones are based on a 1.31-inch 50MP Samsung sensor, which Samsung has discontinued along with its previous Isocell branding in China called the “Light Hunter 900”. If you take a closer look at the spec sheet, you will find a difference in the main camera: the Pro model relies on a “Leica Summilux” lens with an aperture of f/1.42. Thanks to the variable aperture, the lens can be stopped down to f/4.0. The regular Xiaomi 14, on the other hand, has an f/1.6 lens with no variable aperture.
The ultra-wide-angle camera and 3.2x telephoto camera are the same on both models. Behind both lenses is the same Samsung Isocell JN1 sensor with 50MP resolution each, which is significantly smaller than the main sensor by 1/2.76 inches. The lenses offer an aperture ratio of f/2.0 and f/2.2 respectively. Selfie cameras have a resolution of 32 MP. Finally, both Xiaomi models offer good features such as 14-bit RAW and 8K video recording.
Xiaomi 14 vs Xiaomi 14 Pro: Battery and Fast Charging.
Fast charging is Xiaomi’s specialty. So it’s no surprise that the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro are the fastest here. The standard model charges a maximum of 90W, with 120W offered in the Pro model. While the Pro model remains at last year’s level, the Xiaomi 14 has improved slightly – the Xiaomi 13 had a maximum of 67W.
In terms of battery capacity, both smartphones have taken a few baby steps compared to the Xiaomi 13 series. Xiaomi 14 offers 4,610 mAh (previous: 4,500 mAh), and in Xiaomi 14 Pro (previous: 4,820 mAh) there is 4,880 mAh. In practice, we expect the same battery life from both Xiaomi 14 models – a slightly larger capacity should eat the larger display in the Pro model.
Xiaomi 14 vs Xiaomi 14 Pro: Price and Availability
The bad news at this point: Both the regular and Pro models have so far only been announced for the Chinese market. There, the two smartphones are priced at 3,999 and 4,999 yuan respectively in the base configuration. Converted to US dollars, that corresponds to $550 and $685.
However, the two smartphones are expected to be more expensive outside of the Great Wall. The Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro had the same Chinese price in their respective base configurations and were priced at €999 and €1,299 when they launched in Europe. In the year We expect the smartphones to launch globally in early 2024—probably at MWC in Barcelona in late February 2024.
